Healthy Tips for your Feline Family
*** Some cats will overeat when too much food is available. Consider feeding your cat small portions throughout the day, rather than filling the bowl. Just like humans, there is a delay in feeling sated or full. Before that full feeling arrives excess food can be consumed . . . just like you and me. Small portions.
*** In addition to their small portions of kibbles hard food throughout the day, I give my girls a change up in the evening with some soft canned food. Their favorites include chicken in gravy, chicken and cheese in gravy, turkey in gravy, and turkey and cheese in gravy. Rarely do my cats get canned food containing fish. I have read about concerns of unhealthy concentrations of heavy metals in fish, including salmon.
*** Like us, cats need exercise. With four in my family they often interact by chasing each other. They also have numerous kitty toys to bat and chase. Maximum energy expenditures are related to those toys that will roll a long distance, such as marbles and assorted balls. Much of my house is carpeted, so my hard floors in the kitchen and dining rooms are best. Squeaky will chase the beam from my laser pointer all day. Every cat “owner” (hahahaha) should have one.
***Adult cats lack adequate lactase enzyme, and are unable to digest milk and cream. These can give grown kitty an upset stomach and diarrhea.
My girls have endless fun AND get exercise with the Catnip Hurricane Toy. Two white plastic balls in circular trays are batted and stopped and batted again by my cats. To further induce them to play, catnip (comes with the toy) is placed under the center ring.
They sniff and roll up on the center ring trying to get at the catnip, then start the balls spinning around the tracks. Of course, it gives me enjoyment to watch them at play. Great toy!

***Factoid: Cats need to hunt, even if it’s just chasing or tossing a toy.

Cat fun. There are many cheaper laser pointers with too many POOR/ BAD USER REVIEWS. I spent a few bucks more on my cats’ favorite exercising toy, and I’m glad I did. I use the Silvercell Presentation Pointer. I’ve had for more than 8 months and it’s still ticking. Currently at $10.99, it won’t break the bank. That’s a trip to Burger King. My cats are worth it!

*** Cats need water, not milk or cream. Hydration is important to good health. I have multiple water bowls in both upstairs and downstairs locations. And, I keep the water fresh, replenishing the bowls often. My cats definitely show an interest in drinking immediately after I change their water. This is what a good Chief of Staff will do!
***Factoid: A cat can extend and retract its tongue 4 times per second as it drinks.
***Dry cat food is less than 15% water, compared to more than 70% for canned food. My cats must drink a lot since they get only a small portion of canned food as a treat in the evening. In addition to what they drink from the toilet, and the water they consume from my bathtub bottom after I shower, they can drink from any of 5 bowls I have around the house.
***Cats are very clean animals, constantly preening themselves. In so doing they can ingest too much hair, resulting in a hairball. It pains me to hear my cats coughing and retching as they try to rid themselves of the nasty, gooey pellet they will eventually expel on my carpet. Cats need to be brushed regularly, even in the winter. It’s funny — when the other cats see me brushing one they will gather around to wait their turns. They like it!
